Hands-on workshop on "State of the art soft tissue regeneration using collagen-based matrices”

Instructor: Daniel Thoma

Background

Today, implant and reconstructive therapies include a variety of clinical steps to optimize biological and esthetical outcomes. Ridge preservation and soft tissue grafting are considered an integral part of implant therapy and various techniques and materials are applied at different time-points. Whereas autogenous transplants are still widely used, they are associated with major disadvantages, most prominently the associated morbidity. Therefore, more recently, a number of soft tissue substitutes have been developed and some of them demonstrate good clinical success. Nevertheless, more research is necessary to optimize the procedures and the respective materials to obtain the best possible outcomes. This workshop will focus on the clinical decision tree and include step-by-step procedures for the above-mentioned clinical interventions based on recent clinical and scientific evidence.

Theoretical part (very short, mainly illustrating the techniques with clinical cases):

  -

Todays concepts for alveolar ridge preservations: handling of extraction sockets

  -

Preoperative soft tissue management as an important key factor for therapeutic success

  -

What are today’s options to autogenous soft tissue grafting?

  -

Postoperative soft tissue management: time-points and grafting techniques

Hands-on part:

  -

Increase of soft tissue volume applying autogenous connective tissue grafts

  -

Increase of keratinized tissue area using collagen-based materials

  -

Ridge preservation using both autogenous grafts and collagen-based materials

Learning objectives

  -

To recognize clinical indications for soft tissue grafting procedures

  -

To be able to perform two types of ridge preservations techniques

  -

To be able to perform a clinical procedure for soft tissue volume gain
