GCCG: From Evidence to Clinical Implementation

GCCG reaches another milestone: From evidence to clinical implementation

The Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines (GCCG) reached another important milestone at the EAO Congress in Lisbon, demonstrating how this global scientific initiative is advancing from evidence generation to practical clinical implementation.

Over the past two years, GCCG has established a pathway for developing and disseminating evidence-based, patient-centred guidance in implant dentistry. Its first edition, focusing on the treatment of the edentulous maxilla, has already led to the publication of consensus proceedings and clinical recommendations (Link). Building on this scientific foundation, the initiative is now entering its next phase: translating evidence into everyday clinical decision-making.

Turning Evidence into Clinical Practice

A key highlight at the EAO Congress was the announcement of a dedicated GCCG clinical translation supplement in the International Journal of Prosthodontics (Link). The supplement translates the consensus recommendations into practical implementation, showing how evidence-based guidance can be applied in real-world clinical scenarios. Several articles are already available online ahead of print.

Another major step forward is the launch of the Clinical Guidance Tool for the Edentulous Maxilla, now available in beta via gccg.onlinehttps://gccg.online/. This interactive resource helps clinicians apply GCCG recommendations in practice. By turning scientific conclusions into accessible clinical guidance, GCCG continues to bridge the gap between consensus proceedings and patient care.

A Growing Global Partnership

The EAO Congress also gave the GCCG Board and organisational representatives an opportunity to discuss the initiative’s future direction. The three Founding Organisations were represented by Irena Sailer for the EAO, Ronald E. Jung for the ITI and Frank Schwarz for the Osteology Foundation. They were joined by members of the growing international partner network. Although not all representatives could attend in person, several participated remotely and contributed actively to the discussions, underscoring the initiative’s global commitment.

Reflecting GCCG’s growing international relevance, its partnership network continues to expand. Alongside the established partners CSA, JSOI, KAOMI, OSI and SOBRAPI, the initiative recently welcomed EFP, DGI and SEPES, further strengthening its global reach and multidisciplinary perspective.

Building the Framework for the Next Phase

At the meeting, the representative of the member organisation reviewed the organisational framework developed over recent months. Significant progress has been made towards a transparent governance structure designed to safeguard the long-term sustainability, independence and scientific integrity of future GCCG activities.

Preparations for the second edition of GCCG are already under way. Building on the success of the first consensus process, the participating organisations are working closely to define the initiative’s next phase and further advance evidence-based, patient-centred clinical guidance.

Further details on GCCG’s future direction and upcoming activities will be announced soon.
